Dr. Darren Saywell is a seasoned social scientist and a leading expert in sanitation service provision with over 30 years of experience in international development. As the Chief Business Officer at the Millennium Water Alliance (MWA), he oversees program implementation, learning, business development, and knowledge management for the Alliance.
In his prior career roles in the for-profit, not for profit, UN, and industry, he has provided senior technical advisory inputs, mentoring project teams in crucial areas such as on-site and systems-level water security provision, fecal sludge management, utility reform, behavior change, and institutional development. Throughout his career, Dr. Saywell has managed or advised on more than 20 donor-funded water security contracts and agreements across ten countries, leading teams of up to 75 staff and managing projects valued at up to $89 million. He holds a Ph.D. in Sanitary Engineering from Loughborough University and a B.A. (Hons) in Geography from Oxford University.
