The history of the Nexus at the intergovernmental level
The implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) will require a shift away from a sector-by-sector approach towards a more interlinked approach to policy, science, and practice. We reviewed how policy and research have developed from the 1992 Earth Summit to the 2012 Rio+20 in the Nexus of water, food, and energy. In the post-Rio+20 phase and within the SDG Open Working Group, strong voices promoted the idea that a Nexus perspective should be reflected in the targets and indicators under the relevant sector goals. Moving forward, the Nexus community needs to develop the toolkits and frameworks to enable policy makers and intergovernmental bodies to change their respective approaches.
